Dermpat was founded in 2011 as an independant laboratory by Dr. Marc Haspeslagh and grew into a specialized center for dermopathology. It was later taken over by three passionate board-certified dermopathologists. Our laboratory is located in an authentic Art Nouveau building in Ghent.

Today, our team consists of approximately 20 employees, combining medical, technical, administrative, software and AI expertise.

Veronique Clauwaert is our statistical data analyst. As part of her PhD - conducted in collaboration with Ghent University Hospital (UZ Gent) - on the subclassification of flat naevi, she is developing an AI model for classifying skin lesions based on dermoscopic images. Felix De Mûelenaere strengthens our team as a software developer. Together with Veronique, he primarily focuses on our in-house AI project, which was launced in the summer of 2025.

Innovation is a common thread througout our operations - from sample processing to diagnosis - with the goal of delivering efficient, targeted and high-quality diagnostics.

Since 2018, a dermatology practice has also been housed in the Dermpat building. In addition to general dermatology, the practice focuses on hair disorders. The close collaboration between clinic and laboratory offers a unique added value.

We strongly believe in intensive clinicopathological consultation between dermatologists and dermatopathologists, which is crucial for accurate diagnostics and results in the best possible pationt care. Therefore, we regularly organize a Dermpat Case Academy - an evening dedicated to discussing cases, exchanging knowledge, and strengthening the collaboration that is essential for high-quality diagnostics.

Dermpat is internationally recognized as a "Training Center for Dermatopathology" by the ICDP. This allows Belgian and international dermatologists and pathologists with a special interest in and focus on dermatopathology, to train with us and, in turn, enrich our team.
